TPAA Case Win #1346 - TPAA Secures $16,000 Income Protection Pay-out

Changing careers should be a joyful and exciting time, especially when it’s to start your own business. When illness strikes, having income protection gives you peace of mind to know that you’re covered while you recover, unfortunately that was not the case for one of our TPA members.

Working part-time in schools for the past three years, Jane* had decided to focus on building up her own private practice. However, before her business could take off, she fell ill and had to stop working altogether.

She applied for income protection through her super fund, but was shocked to find out that her cover had been changed to a much lower amount due to her change of employment status.

Feeling stressed and unsure of how to proceed, Jane asked for a case manager at the super fund to look into the issue. She asked for her level of income protection to be based on her previous employment at the school, but her claim was withheld.

With no clear solution in sight, she reached out to TPAA for help.

Upon receiving Jane's case, our TPAA case manager launched an investigation into the matter. After careful examination of the policy and discussion with the super fund, it was found that the fund had unfairly assessed Jane's income protection pay-out based on her current employment status. The case manager successfully lodged a complaint to AFCA (the Australian Financial Complaints Authority) against the super fund on Jane's behalf.

Thanks to the diligent work of her TPAA case manager, Jane was finally awarded her correctly calculated income protection pay-out of $16,000. She was overjoyed with the outcome, expressing her gratitude for the support and guidance she received from TPAA.
