TPAA case win: A teacher was called into a conduct meeting after a personal post sparked complaints. With the support of a TPAA advocate, the teacher was able to explain the post was philosophical, personal in nature, and not directed at any individual, school, or department.
The teacher’s post was clearly framed as personal thoughts. It named no individuals, no school, no department. It even included a tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating disclaimer.
By late afternoon on the day of the post, the teacher had received a meeting request from the principal to discuss conduct concerns regarding their social media activity. A fellow staff member had found the post offensive and felt it necessary to report our member to the principal.
After contacting TPAA, the member was immediately assigned an experienced advocate who attended the meeting with them. The member explained that the post was philosophical in nature and not directed at any person, program, or department. They acknowledged that if anyone had been genuinely hurt, he was willing to address it directly with them.
TPAA's presence at the meeting was important. Not because the outcome was in serious doubt, but because having a professional advocate in the room changes the dynamic. It ensures the meeting is conducted properly, that the member's perspective is fully and accurately heard, and that no informal pressure produces a worse outcome than the formal system would.
Social media conduct cases are increasing in education. Teachers have a right to their own views expressed in their own time, within lawful limits.
